Loft Series #5

We would like to welcome you to the fifth in a series of intimate house concerts hosted by Bill Thompson, Brent Fariss, and Clark Crawford. In this particular series (the loft series) we will be following a standard format of one installation followed by two solo performances. The solo performances will be performed from the loft above and out of sight of the audience seated below. We have always struggled with the all too common phenomenon of audience members looking at what is being performed at the expense of listening to what is being performed. Through this series we are hoping to refocus our energies back into the act of listening as a primary vehicle of experiencing our surroundings.

Installation - Commercial Fabric #1 - Nick Smith

A document of different hum patterns created by a room full of videotape
recorders. The sounds were captured with a telephone pickup mic as it roved
from machine to machine. This installation was designed to emulate a path
of busy electrical signals.

Nick Smith: Trombonist in the New Music Coop. Co-founder of the occult music/art collective, Blau. Field recordings under the moniker, Tremata. I spend alot of time worrying about overpopulation, the sudden passage of time, and
the state of my physical health. I like health food, sleep, and pants. This is my first installation. It's an attempt to travel inside machines. Extensive recordings and selective editing was used to build the electrical pathway. Attention was paid to sudden movement, extended moments of rest and thick walls of noise. Hopefully, a sense of motion will be felt as signals bounce from corner to corner.

“Six Demon Bag” (for five violas and viola) - James Alexander

“Six Demon Bag" is presented in the form of a multi-tracked improvisational concerto for violas with live viola soloist 'cadenza'. Created exclusively for this performance, it promises to be full of wind, fire, all that type of thing.

Violist James Alexander is a composer and performer working in Austin, TX. He records and performs with cinders, e.c.f.a, the Imbroglio String Quartet, My Education, Shearwater, ultrasound, and a variety of small and large improvisational ensembles.
