Holland Hopson

Holland Hopson is a composer, improviser, and electronic artist. As an instrumentalist he performs on soprano saxophone, banjo, boomboxes, and metronomes. Holland often augments his instruments with custom-designed sensor interfaces and performs with his own highly-responsive, interactive computer programs.

Holland has performed with Thomas Buckner, George Lewis, Neil Rolnick, and LaDonna Smith, among others. He has performed at numerous venues including The Kitchen, The Knitting Factory, and Roulette. Holland has held residencies at STEIM, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Experimental Music Studios, Krakow and Katowice, Poland; Sonic Arts Research Studio, Vancouver, Canada; and Harvestworks Digital Media Arts, New York.

In 1993-1994 Holland recorded environmental sounds on four continents and in over a dozen countries as a fellow of the Thomas J. Watson Foundation. Holland has also received grants from Meet the Composer.

Holland is currently developing a sound installation based on Marcel Duchamp’s With Hidden Noise, recording the sounds of planes flying overhead, and whittling down the last World Series broadcasts to one sustained roar of the crowd.
